The world’s finest specialist paper collection
We search out the finest and the most distinctive paper products and innovations from around the world for those that seek to inspire and impress. We work" in partnership with the very best high-end brands, creative designers, and specialists to provide paper for a twenty-first century audience.
G . F Smith offers paper products, special makes and highly bespoke services tailored specifically to the needs of the creative industries. Our specialist team works to a level of craft and customisation and degrees of flexibility that are almost impossible to replicate.
The range of additional services we offer exists because of long relationships with and understanding of the needs of working designers. From the preparation of exquisitely hand-made dummies and samples to the adaptation of paper for optimised digital printing, the work of our skilled staff matches the exceptional standard of our papers.
Bespoke makings offer designers the opportunity to create a superb quality of paper in a unique colour. Working with our Paper Consultants, we can help you produce paper in a unique colour, size, and in any weight. We’ll run colour match tests in the laboratory so you can check everything before the final production run.
And perhaps most useful of all, we only ask for a minimum order of one tonne for a bespoke size or weight in an existing Colorplan shade (with the exception of weights above 350gsm which would incur a two tonne minimum order), and just three tonnes for a bespoke colour (this can be split across varying weights and sizes). As these minimums are significantly less than other manufacturers demand, it means a more cost effective and less wasteful exercise overall. Add duplexing, envelopes and digital coating, and the possibilities for exceptional and special papers are limitless.
Our specialist envelope team in Hull can produce envelopes either by hand or on machine. The majority of papers in the Collection can be converted into seven standard envelope styles — DL Wallet, DL Wallet Window, DL Banker, C6, C5, C4 and 155x155mm. You can also create your own hand-made, bespoke envelopes from business card size up to A3. Order a minimum quantity of 50 envelopes across all styles. DL and C6 are available in either gummed flap or peel-and-seal.

Paper is a very malleable material that lends itself to an embossed finish across our entire Collection. As a result we’re able to offer a great variety of surface textures and patterns that are embossed into the sheet. There are currently 25 embossed textures for Colorplan on weights from 135gsm up to 700gsm, and other papers in our Collection can be embossed too. To add to the effect, some papers can have a double-sided emboss, created using machinery that has been retained and maintained by G . F Smith since 1930.
Duplexing is a process where two or more sheets of equal weight are press laminated to create a permanently bonded material. Robust and distinctive, colour combinations can work to great effect especially when a contrasting colour is shot through the middle layer of a triplexed sheet. Produced by our skilled team on specialised machines, duplexing can start from two sheets of 175gsm up to our current tested threshold of six sheets of 350gsm paper (2100gsm).
Since the first days of digital printing, we’ve experimented and tested the process of adding digital coatings to our stocks, ensuring that our coloured, textured, metallic, FSC accredited and recycled papers are suitable for new printing technologies. The result is that we already guarantee the majority of our ranges for HP Indigo, Xerox iGen, Kodak Nexpress, Colour Laser and Inkjet technologies. Some of our uncoated papers, including Colorplan, are already naturally compatible with digital printing. Others are easily adapted with an aqueous coating applied by our own dedicated presses to ensure the paper performs to the highest standards during the digital printing process.
Handcrafted in our own specialist workshop by a master bookbinder, the production of hand-made dummies is a service that few if any other British paper merchants offer. Made using any of our available papers, weights and finishes, these dummies are perhaps the only way to truly appreciate the weight, texture and colour of our beautiful papers before going to the expense of a final production piece. You can request them in a variety of bespoke formats including case bound and thread sewn books.
The swatches that you’ll find provided in the Collection swatch books can only go so far in indicating the true qualities of our papers, which is why we are happy to provide sample sheets on request direct from our sample room in every colour, shade, texture and weight from the Collection. You can give us a call to discuss your requirement in more detail or order your samples through the Collection website at gfsmith.com/thecollection.

Our Paper Consultants have decades of gathered experience, all of which they’re only too happy to place at your disposal. Their passion for paper is limitless, as is their knowledge of what it is capable of, and what G . F Smith can help a designer achieve with it. So, whether it’s very early stages on a project, a technical challenge you’re facing, or you simply need to be walked through the scope and scale of our Collection, an informal chat with one of our Paper Consultants will be the perfect way to start. Our papers are regularly used for packaging by some of the world’s most exclusive beauty, fashion and cosmetics brands. The result is that we’ve gathered a huge amount of experience in this very precise and image-conscious sector and our amassed knowledge is now at your disposal. You’re welcome to browse our extensive library of packaging samples to discover what is possible (and see that nothing is impossible). We’ll also be happy to take your emerging three-dimensional concepts and bring them to life on our CAD system.
Thanks in no small part to our modest minimums and hands-on approach to small-run production, G . F Smith is a provider of choice to producers of greetings cards — a remarkable and growing marketplace. We can offer our premium stocks, made ready for digital printing, duplexed for additional specialness, and scored to fold. And of course, we can supply envelopes in matching stock. It’s part of our long history of supporting publishers and smaller enterprises, and we’re proud to continue it. Contact a consultant.
As well as providing large format sheet sizes for general printing purposes, we offer a bespoke sheet cutting service for when jobs require something beyond the norm. If you let us know what you require from our Collection, we can supply specific quantities of all our papers to the exact shape or size you need.
We don’t place an arbitrary minimum on the paper you can order from us. So, irrespective of the stock, you can place an order without the waste that often comes from other suppliers demands for far larger minimums. Paper is a precious and beautiful resource that we hate to see wasted, and we’re sure that designers feel the same way.
Not every job comes in at a precise, exact run, rounded up to the nearest 500 sheets. That’s exactly why we’re happy to provide you with exact sheet quantities down to single digits (just as long as it’s more than 25 sheets). It’s all part of making sure we try to eradicate waste and provide designers with exactly what they need.
At G . F Smith, we’re constantly seeking out new papers and processes, expanding our collections and adding to our knowledge. So much so that it’s been a while since we took a look at this site.
Well, having expanded our paper collection, tested and introduced new processes, and spent a lot of time talking to designers about selecting paper, we’re delighted to present a complete overhaul of the site.
Perhaps most importantly, we’ve introduced search filters in the ‘We Recommend’ tool. You can now refine your search by a paper’s suitability for processes like foiling or digital printing, or its availability in certain weights and finishes. When it’s time to look at the real thing, you’re able to easily place Sample orders through our ‘My Samples’ tool. Its quick and easy too.
This makes the task of finding and choosing paper from our collection more insightful and easier than before.
