The Art Of The Line - Nendo
BY LAURA HOUSELEY
Like a pencil line being drawn across a piece of paper, so the designs of Nendo are simple, direct, instinctive. Regardless of material or function – and Nendo are prolific designers, creating everything from electronics to packaging, lighting and furniture – the clarity of Nendo’s work is key. The simple line is a fitting analogy to both the final form of Nendo’s work; which is sparse and reductive, and also the means of communication at work: Nendo designs are most often the conclusion of an especially linear thought process. In new works previewed last month, Nendo took this elementary process further than ever before by exposing the process of glass making in the collection ‘still&sparkling’ and reducing furniture to its most elementary parts in ‘black&black’ amongst no less than thirteen separate exhibitions of new work. Nendo are a Tokyo-based studio of designers led by Oki Sato.
