Focus On Foliage - The Plant Journal
BY LAURA HOUSELEY
‘We couldn’t find any magazine talking about plants in a curious, beautiful and intimate way’ says The Plant Journal’s Director and Editor Cristina Merino. The solution for Barcelona-based journalist Merino and graphic designers Carol Montpart and Isa Merino was to create their own biannual homage to all things leafy.
The Plant Journal has a heavy focus on foliage sure enough, but the publication is simultaneously a gentle and whimsical take on lifestyle, craft and creativity. This isn’t your regular gardening magazine: ‘There are beautiful and unexpected connections between creativity and plants at the moment’ points out Merino. Learn that Omar Sosa, Art Director of Apartamento magazine, is behind much of The Plant Journal’s casual imagery and the positioning of this publication becomes clear.
Plants, although sometimes the singular topic (a homage to the Stag Head Fern was a highlight of the launch issue) are largely a poetic underpinning to the editorial content; ‘There is something very special in plants, they might represent the immutable force of nature, but also the fragility and inevitable passing of time.’ Issue no.2 includes a reflection on the garden of Uncle Tati and an ode to Monstera Deliciosa.
